Trot XII Meet Notes (Version 2: Dec 4, 2008)
Possum Trot Orienteering Club welcomes you to the 12th
annual Possum Trot XII, held this year in Bluffwoods
Conservation Area, near St. Joseph, MO, Sunday, December 7, 2008. We hope you
enjoy the event.

- Approximately
13-km "goat" style orienteering race.
- There may be hunters in the woods! It is the last day of
"Firearms Deer - Muzzleloader Portion" season. And the Deer -
Archery season is ongoing. Please wear hunter-orange colors. A
limited supply of hunter-orange safety vests will be available.
- THIS
COURSE IS VERY PHYSICAL !!! Climb = greater than 650 meters !!!
- For
full credit, you may only skip two (2) controls. The skips do not have to
be consecutive.
- For
partial credit, you may skip as many controls as you like, but your result
will be reduced. Those who skip
only 2 will be placed first, followed by those who skip 3, followed by
those who skip 4….etc.
- When you finish, STAY IN ORDER until officials have taken your control card.
- 5-HOUR
TIME LIMIT! If you have not arrived at the 2nd water stop (just after #12)
by 11:00 a.m. you are not on pace to complete the course within the time
limit. Please cut the course short and return to the start/finish before
2:00 p.m.
- Schedule:
- 8:00 a.m. - Registration, packet pickup
- 8:45 a.m. - Briefing in parking lot. Wear your
sweat clothes, there will be time to put your
sweats in your car after the briefing.
- 9:00 a.m. - Mass start of Possum Trot XII.
- 11:00 a.m. - Hot potatoes and chili will be
available. Possum Trot XII
participants only!
- Soon after 1st 3 finishes - Awards will be
presented.
- 2:00 p.m. - Course closes...return to start
before 2:00 p.m.
- Map
scale - 1:10,000. Contours – 5 meters
- Clues
will be printed on the map. Separate clue sheets will be in your packet.
- Visibility
is good, but there is a lot of undergrowth. Trails are covered with fallen leaves
and therefore indistinct.
- There
will be 2 refreshment stops. The
first at 3 km will have only water.
The second at the halfway point (7.5 km) will have Gatorade, water,
and cookies). You may drop your special refreshments in boxes at the start
for delivery to the 2nd refreshment stop. You may wish to carry
snacks and water with you.
- Be
mindful of traffic when you cross roads in the area.
- Be
sure to thank the volunteers.
